Research and Professional Experience, Projects
Editor-in-Chief – Journal of Biobased Materials and Bioenergy. http://www.aspbs.com/jbmb
2005 to present – SUNY-ESF, Department of Paper and Bioprocess Engineering, Professor (2011 - ), Associate Professor (2007 - 2011), and assistant professor (2005 - 2007). Research focus on bioprocess engineering, hot-water extraction of woody biomass, hydrolysis of woody biomass and wood extracts, fermentation (ethanol, butanol, lactic acid and PHA), biodiesel, alkaline pulping of hot-water extracted woodchips, adaptation of fermentative organisms to wood extract / hydrolyzate media, kinetic analysis, chemical reaction engineering, and transport phenomena including membrane separation of wood extracts, purification of fermentable sugar stream. Kinetic and fermentation experiments have been performed under bench-scale (1 – 16 liter) reactors to 400 liter bioreactor / fermentor and 65 ft3 reactors, as well as pilot scale membrane separation units.
1996 to 2005 – University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Assistant Professor. Oil Sands Slurry transport, mass transfer and flow in fluid-solid systems, chemical kinetics, chemical reaction and transport in biological systems, pulp and paper engineering.
1987 to 1996 – University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. PhD students and post-doctorate fellow. As a postdoctorate fellow (1992-1996), Dr. Liu has been working in various projects including fluid-particle dynamics, oil-sand-water emulsion/suspensions, and packed bed.
